Realisation And Presentation

Explore ways of presenting your idea. you should outline at least two different ways in which you intend to present, which should include the following:

a) Traditional forms of presentation e.g. prints, gallery, exhibition, screening

b) Digital exhibition with interactive elements- e.g. website, installation, game

There are many different ways in which you can choose to present you work two in which include Traditional forms and Digital exhibition with interactive elements. The traditional forms of presenting is usually the most common way of presenting work. This type of presenting is usually done by using prints, gallery exhibitions and screening. If you’re using this type of presenting you would need to get prints made of your work to be able to hand out to people or to have them displayed in an exhibition and/ or a gallery so people can come and go to view your work. This type of presenting is usually prefered as it allows people to see your work in real time and also be able to touch and engage with the work. However with the current situation this type of work isn’t possible which leads us to the second form of presenting which is a digital exhibition which includes interactive elements. Presenting this way will be difficult as to do this you need to know how to code to create a website or game o you may near to hire someone which makes this way more expensive to keep a hold of. However the good thing about presenting your work this way is that it allows people to be able to view the work wherever they are whenever they want. The interactive features will also make the work more memorable and more fun for the audience to see.

When creating interactive media you will need to ensure you have planned many things to allow the media to be a success. One of the very first things you’ll you need to do is to ensure you’re able to do the coding for a website or a game or hire someone who does so you’ll be able to have functioning media. Once this has been done you’ll then need to choose the type of media you want to have shown o your game or website and to complete copyright documents so your work cannot be stolen. If i was presenting my work with digital media i would create my work in the form of a gallery to have all my work displayed in front of the viewer i would also arrange the work in a colour order to make the work satisfying and more engaging to the audience. The problems im most likely to face is the website crashing or not being able to display my work the way i want to. I’d resolve these problems by looking in to what caused the website to crash and by also displaying my work differently.

Develop and plan creative ideas for integrated project

One idea that i came up with is to take photos of peoples eyes. The reason as to why i chose this idea is because everyone has different eyes which is also a way to distinguish a persons identity from other people. If i was to further develop this idea i would need to find a number of models each with different types of eye colours. I will then have the models stand in front of a white background whilst having studio lights on there face to help allow the colour of there eyes to pop. I will then edit the photos to show more details of the eyes to make them more unique to the model based on the details that are seen. Before i’d go ahead with this idea i will need to ensure that my models have completed a release form so i’m able to use the photos of them when i present them in my group crit. I will also need to ensure that i have all the equipment that i’ll need when shooting. This includes my Canon Camera with both my lens as well as a macro lens to ensure i get to see more details of the eye. I will also need to ensure i have studio lights as well as a tripod so i’m able to have a steady shot with the correct lighting.

Another idea that i came up with is to take different types of shots and angles of peoples face to express and show there identity. For this idea to be developed i will need to find some models and take photos of there side profile as well as close up of eyes, mouth and nose. Before i do this idea i would again need to ensure the models have completed a release form so they can appear in my work and to also ensure i have all the correct equipment for when i’m shooting. The equipment i’d require is a Canon camera as well as studio lighting and a tripod to again ensure i have a steady shoot with the correct lighting.

The final idea i came up with is to represent my identity. I would do this by taking photos of myself as well as everyday items that i use that i believe helps identify me such as the clothes i wear for different purposes such as work clothes and my everyday clothes, my phone and things around my bedroom that make me who i am. I would also take photos of my face as well as my hair because they also help identity who i am. Before shooting i will need to make sure that i have all the equipment that i need such as a camera and a tripod. I also need to ensure i have the items i would like to shoot such as items of my clothing and my phone.

The final idea that i chose to further develop is idea number 2. I chose this idea because i believe that it helps to better identify the subjects. I will be doing this idea by taking photos of my friends some in college using the studio to have better access to lighting when shooting. I will also take photos outside of college of a few of my other friends in front of a white background. Whilst doing this idea i will also ensure that i’m keeping both myself and my model safe by being Covid safe by wearing a face covering as well as sanitising my equipment before shooting and making sure im in a sanitary environment

Research and investigation of Identity

What are ways that identity could/ has been represented in photography, as well as other visual and media practice?

Identity can be represented in many ways such as through personal identity, cultural, social, body image, fashion; issues of gender, class, ethnicity.

Fashion is a big way in which identity is able to be represented in photography and the media.. The clothes we wear help identify our interest and style in life. For example if someone is wearing a sports bra and leggings its helps us identify them as having an interest in the gym and fitness. Another example of fashion that helps show identity is grunge clothing if a girl is seen wearing chequered clothing with things such as fishnet tights with any other types of dark clothing they’d be viewed as grunge meaning they have an interest in rock subculture such as punk rock and heavy metal.

Body image is a big part of identity because it helps determine how a person views themselves and the attitude they may have. If someone has a poor body image they might try to cover up and keep there body hidden. They might have a negative attitude on life and may not focus on everyday things as they are to busy focusing on making themselves look better. However someone who has a positive body image may be more confident and be happy to show off their body and have a more positive attitude on life and be more focused on things.

Photography can help show peoples race, gender, ethnicity, class and culture which helps show parts of people’s identity.

Sally Mann is a good example of work that helps portray identity effectively. This can be shown with her work titled ‘faces’. In this work we can see multiple shots of a woman’s face with each image containing a different focal point. The woman also appears as if she’s looking through glass due to some part of the image containing cracks. The use of the close ups as well as containing different focal points in the photos helps to allow us to get a closer look into the woman’s identity due to being able to see different aspects of the ace as well as different details of her facial features. For example in one photo we can see freckles all over the woman’s nose however is other photos her nose appears as if she doesn’t have any. I feel as though these types of photos allow us to understand that people view others differently. Seeing these photos have helped inspired the photos i want to take and have given me a way to further develop my ideas by focusing on different points of the face rather than just the face as a whole.

Another practitioner that helps show identity is a film called memento. The film is about an insurance investigator who suffers from amnesia so he then uses notes and photos of tattoos as a way to find a man who he believes killed his wife. This helps relate to the film as it helps us see different ways in which we’re able to identify people. This film again helped progress my idea towards identity because it allowed me to know i could use small features of a person which could still help identify them.

This is my world Part 2

What are the requirements for planning and recording video?

When recording video you have to plan the same way you would when you record audio. You have to start of by deciding what you’re going to shoot and where your’e going to shoot. You also need to ensure to complete both a release form for a location as well as for a person. You will also need to complete a risk assessment to make sure everything is safe when shooting.

Task 1:

What is your world at the moment?

What would you like your world to be?

Task 2:

Edit a short video

Task 3:

Reflect on outcomes

Ways of seeing: This is my world

What are the requirement for planning and recording audio?

The requirements when planning are recording audio is to firstly plan out and organise what you are hoping to record and what you also intend to use when editing the audio after it has been recorded.

you also need to ensure a release form has been completed so you’re allowed to use the persons voice without any legal constraints. When recording audio you also want to make sure the background is quiet so the person speaking can be heard fully. You should also make sure that the person speaking is speaking with a clear clean voice with no mumbling so the audio comes out clear and can be easily heard and translated. As the audio is being recorded use headphones to hear how the audio is being recorded to ensure its clear and to allow you to make any necessary changes whilst still recording.

Task 1:

What is the world at the moment?

Describe what you see and what you do.

What are your interests? What do you like doing?

What is a typical day for you?

Task 2:

What would you like your world to be?

What would you like to be doing if you weren’t in lockdoen?

What are some of your aims and ambitions for the future?

What are places you’d like to visit?

Case Studies

I have chosen 3 photographers for my case study the first photographer i chose was Fran Lanting.

Fran Lanting

Fran Lanting is a Dutch national geographic photographer. He was born 13th July 1951 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Hans has been hailed as one of the greatest photographer of our time. He’s had work that’s appeared in exhibitions, books, magazines around the world. Frans earned a masters degree in economics and then later moved to the United states to study environmental planning. Soon after he began photographing nature. The reason as to why I’ve chosen to study Frans is because an area of my interest is nature and also because i find his work beautiful and amazing.

Eye To Eye

This photo taken by Frans is part of his collection called Eye to Eye. In this photo we can see two adult penguins staring down at a baby penguin. This photo is one of my favourites out of his whole collection as it allows us to get in depth with the animal world more and helps us to see how they act such as being close like family. Lanting chose this collection to show his personal observations and stories of working in the animal kingdom. This photo allows us to see the true beauty of nature. The light blue in this photo helps add a calm atmosphere to the photo

Peter Lindbergh

Peter lindbergh was a German fashion photographer and film director. He was born 23rd November 1944 and unfortunately passed away on the 3rd September 2019. Peter was known for his cinematic images and is recognized as one of the most influential contemporary photographers. Before becoming a photographer Peter worked as a window dresser for a local department stored and later enrolled in the Berlin academy of fine arts in the early 60s. In 1971 he turned his attention to photography and worked with Hans Lux for 2 years before opening his own studio in 1973. His photography introduced a new form of realism by redefining the beauty standards he did this because as he described ‘this should be the responsibility of photographers today to free women, and finally everyone from the terror of youth and perfection’. Lindbergh is known for working with famous fashion brands and magazines such as Vogue, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair.

In 1990 Lindbergh was asked the shoot the woman of the decade for a January 1990 cover of UK Vogue. For the photo he photographed Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz and Christy Turlington. He photographed them as themselves with very little make up. These types of photos were very inspirational as he allowed women to be seen in how they are with characterful faces, aged hands and bodies that may be judged as imperfect to help dhow them as normal and help redefine the beauty standards of women. He wanted to help free women from the terror of youth and having to be ‘perfect’. He wanted to show that all women are beautiful and don’t have to fit the gender stereotypes of women for them to be viewed as ‘perfection’. The fact that this photo was taken in black and white helps us too see the beauty of these women as a whole to create a directs focus of them as a subject of the photo rather than people getting distracted by different elements in the photo.

Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange was an American documentary photographer and photojournalist who was born 26th May 1895 and unfortunately passed away 11th October 1965. Lange is best know for her work in the Depression-era for the Farm Security Administration . Lange work greatly allowed us to see the consequences of the great depression which she helped to document. One of Langes most famous photos is the photo of Migrant Mother which is a photo that is considered to have changed the world.

The Migrant Mother photo was taken in 1936. In the photo we can see a photo of a mother and her children living in poverty. The message of this image is very powerful as it allows us to see the true effect of the great depression. It also helps to symbolise the hunger, poverty and hopelessness that many Americans faced during the great depression. This photo helps us to see how powerful the love of a mother is and what they go through to ensure there children are safe. This photo is also very powerful because it caused the government to make a change and to send 20,000 pound of food to help relieve starvation in a migrant worker camp.

The idea behind this project was to create a poster that helps spread awareness about covid-19. My initial idea of the project was to take photos of people of all different ages wearing masks to help and symbolise that with everything that is going on you’re not alone.

For the projects we was all put in groups. The group i was put in was with Rachel and Millie. As a group we collectively took photos that we would like to use for our project. Millie and I took the first lot of our photos together in the studio whilst having Rachel on a video call with us. We each discussed our ideas together and shot them in the studio to figure out what we liked best. Once we had finished our work in the studio we then went out individually to take more shots that we would like to use for our project.

Due to Covid restriction i was unable to go out and take the photos i had originally planned to take so i used the photos from the studio for my final poster. Across each of our posters we used the slogan ‘You’re not alone’ this allowed us to connect our posters together to make them essentially part of a series.

Although my final poster wasn’t what i had originally planned to have i still believe its successful as it still helps spread the message i wanted to show and also helps show that people aren’t alone due to showing more than one person present in the photo.

Final Evaluation

For this project my aims were to shoot photos that helped show the effect lockdown had on the economy by shooting in places that were populated pre-covid.

The type of research i did was look into other documentary photographers who shot in the same format as me and by looking at photos that also showed the effect certain issues had on the economy as well as different types of communities such as the working class. This research was useful as it allowed me to think of ideal places for me to take my photos and to inspire me more to take my photos in black and white.

For my shoots i planned to go to multiple locations to show how much lockdown has changed them. I first planned to go to a recreational ground near my house to avoid travelling to a further location. I planned to photograph a tennis court as well as a football pitch. I planned to take these photos as i knew that they sued to be lively before lock down whereas when i took them the location was isolated. I also planned to go to town centres to take photos a long the streets to show how they had also changed. I also planned out to only go to these location based on when i had to travel for work to make sure i was keeping myself safe and only travelling for essential purposes. My original plans was to travel up to London to take photos around the city due to it being able to show the full effect of covid however i was unable to do this due to being put into a tier 4 restriction.

The problems i encountered when shooting is not being able to travel to my original location and not always being able to take photos due to work. i resolved these issues by finding new places to shoot. I also was able to work around the issues of not being able to shoot due to work by shooting before my shift and after so i still had shots to use and also enabling me to shoot in different areas.

Despite the issues i faced i believe that overall my work was successful. What i believe went well with the practical side of my project is the photos i was able to take and how they came out due to the lighting. What didnt go well when shooting my photos is some of the angles my photos were taken in however this allowed me to learn what to do better next time and how to improve. Overall i believe i achieved all that i aimed to do when planning for this project

Research in Practical Work

The idea i want to convey with my work is to show the effect lockdown has had on the economy and how public places have been effected such as town centres. I want to help show how these places have now become empty and appear isolated whereas before lockdown they were busy and lively.

The situation i want to represent is to help document the coronavirus pandemic and the effect it has on public places in order to do this i need to travel to popular places that used to be busy and show how they have changed. When doing this i need to ensure i stick to government guidelines so ill be going to local places or places that i need to travel to for work purposes.

I can record actuality in a visually interesting way by taking my photos in black and white to help show more detail of the photo and to allow people to see the photo as a whole.

Reflection on Shoot Day’s

Day 1: My aim of today’s shoot was document an outdoor recreational ground to show the effects lockdown has had on it. I chose to go to both a football field and tennis court due to the fact that before lockdown both of these places were busy and they are now both empty. I chose to take these photos in black and white as an attempt to show more detail in the photos and as a way to create a feeling on lonliness towards the photo. For the majority of the photos this day i used my Canon EOS 4000D however, i did take some photos on my phone due to my camera dying. On this day i also decided to visit a pub and take photos of the outside to show that something that used to be so lively and popular was now isolated.

Day 2: On the second day of my shoot i visited a town centre. I hadn’t initially planned to take these photos due to only visiting the town centre for work purposes so i was slightly unprepared and resorted to taking the photos on my phone. My reasoning for taking these photos was to help show how less populated high streets had become. In my opinion i don’t believe these photos are successful due to them being taken in a rushed manor resulting in the angles being off which is something i would do differently next time. However what i believe is successful is that the photo does allow us to see that the high street is less populated due to not many people being around.

Day 3: On my final shoot day i again went to another town centre for the same purpose as before so i was again unprepared and had to resort to taking the photos on my phone. I again wanted to help show how a high street had become less populated. These photos faced the same issues as the previous day due to the angle being slightly off. However they were successful in what i was trying to achieve due to them showing the high street less populated than it would have been pre lockdown.
