My journeys project is about showing my journey as i travel around different places. The places i decided to travel around include London, Brighton and also my local woods. My idea as a whole was to show two different perspectives of life by showing city life as well as country life and to show clearly how they differ. The way i did this was by taking pictures of buildings as well as famous landmarks in both London and Brighton. I then took photos around a woodland area to show a less populated area with just nature around.
What did i achieve overall?:
I think that overall i was able to discover new ways to shoot my photos and to travel to different locations in which i usually shoot at if i wasn’t completing this project. I was also able to successfully portray a journey through the use of photos.
What skills did i acquire? and what can i approve on?:
When completing this project i was able to learn to plan a journey and to complete research on it to help develop my ideas further so I’m able to successfully shot my photos. I was also able to learn how to successfully shot my photos in black and white. I was also able to show leading lines in my photos as well as close ups to give a different perspective on the surroundings. This is mainly visible in my photos that i took when completing my journey in my local woods.
What skills do i want to investigate further?:
The skills i want to investigate further is my use of showing horizontal lines in my photos. The reason before this is because when i was shooting my other photos which contained horizontal lines i didn’t correct proportionate my photo which then made some buildings in my photos appear as if they are toppling over.
What aspects were useful?:
Being able to plan my shoot was very useful because it allowed me to decide where i want to shoot my photos and also what days. by doing this allowed production of my photos to run very smoothly and it also allowed me to be less likely to experience issues when shooting such as weather disturbing my shoot. Planning also allowed me to know when London would be less populated allowing me to keep myself and others safe by going at a less busier time and day of the week. Planning also allowed me to keep organised when conducting my photos.
Being able to conduct research was also very useful as it allowed me to further develop my ideas for my shoot by looking into other peoples work as a way to gain inspiration for my work. Research also allowed me to discover what time of day will be better to shoot and what locations will be best to shoot in. Doing this allows my photos to come out successfully due to it allowing me to keep myself safe and to also gain the best natural light for my photos to allow them to come out clear. My research also allowed me to figure out what type of shots i’d want to take in a certain location.
What did i learn?:
Overall when shooting my work i learned what time of day is best to shoot to gain the best lighting for the type of shot that i was doing. I also learned to keep taking multiple shots to gain my best photo and to also allow me to get a lot of comparison photos to show how they improved as i kept shooting.
When completing my journeys project overall i decided to go on 3 different types of journeys however i only included one as my final journey. The three journeys i went on included a walk around Brighton/Worthing, a walk around my local woods and finally a walk around London.
Hamish is a photographer, teacher and also the founder of photographic journeys website.
One of his photos that helped inspire my ideas for my journeys projects is a photo he had taken of a flower seller at dawn.
In the photo we can see a flower seller in a boat paddling around in a lake. On the boat we can see bright flowers. The boat also contains drawings of flower on the side of it. In the water we can see a lot of Lilypad’s as well as reflections from trees.
In my opinion, I think the photo can be used to connote loneliness due to the flower seller appearing isolated in the middle of a lake. The fact that the photo was taken at dawn also helps add to the idea of loneliness due to most people being asleep at this time. The use of the bright colours in the flowers could connote hope. The flowers help to draw the viewer in and also helps to make the photo more eye catching.
The use of contrast of the light and dark in this photo helps draw our attention to the flowers which could help suggest that the flowers are the focal point of the photo.
This photo helped to inspire me with my final idea as it shows the use of a journey on a boat. This helped to inspire me to take part of my journey on a boat around London on the river thames.
Riccardo Magherini
Riccardo is a florence based fine art photographer. Ricardo photographer helps show the movement of time.
One of the photos taken by Riccardo that helped inspire me is called Shinjuku. In this photo we can see part of Shinjuku with part of a blur as things are moving. We can also see cars moving as well as lots of people. We can also see a lot of the buildings in the city.
In my opinion i think this photo greatly shows a journey due to it showing a shadowey effect of objects moving showing they are travelling to different locations. This photo helped inspire me for my final photos as the photo was taken in a populated area with a lot of people around which helps show numerous journeys due to every person travelling to different places.
Another photo by Riccardo that helped inspire me is a photo called Shibuya. In this we can again see the same shadow effect that was used in the last photo with lots of people around. This photo helps connote sadness due to the use of the child on the right who appears to look sad. The use of the umbrella could suggest that its raining which helps again connote sadness due to rain often used to represent something sad. The reason as to how this photo inspired me is due to it being taken in a town or city which helped give me the idea of taking a photo in a city and further develop it into taking photos around the city centre.
Henry Wessel
Henry Wessel wan an American photographer who was greatly know for taking black and white photos of American West. Henry liked to describe his work as ‘work without words’
One of my favourite photos by Henry and also photo that helped inspire my final photos is a photo called ‘Richmond Bridge’. In the photo we can see the front interior of a car aswell as a road ahead which appears to be isolated. The use of the black and white in the photo helps allow us to focus on the photo as a whole rather than getting distracted by numerous colours which don’t allow us to focus on the whole photo. The fact that the photo has been taken in first person helps make the audience feel as though they are in the photo which helps bring them closer to the photo. In my opinion the empty road and having only one hand visible in the photo helps convey loneliness which could help suggest that this is the reason as to why the photo is in black and white due to it helping connote sadness. This photo helped inspire my idea of showing a Journey through the use of transport. My chosen transport was a boat which i travelled on across part of the river Thames.
Another photo by Henry that i like is a photo called ‘incidents 006’. In the photo we can see two kids who appear to be fighting outside a school. We can also see the interior of a car door window which the photo has been taken out of.
In my opinion i believe that the black and white filter on the photo helps to allow the viewer to focus of the subjects emotion state which in this photo could be both anger and sadness due to the photo appearing as though a fight is happening or one of the subjects may be getting bullied. The interior of the car window in the photo helps allow us to know that the photo was taken prior to the 2000s. We can also tell this through the clothing that is worn. This helps the viewer feel as though they have travelled back in time. The way the photo was taken also allows the audience to feel as though they are immersed in the photo making them get a deeper connection toward the photo.
This photo inspired me because i liked the idea of having people visible in a few of my photos because it helps allow us to see multiple journeys at one time due to these people each travelling to different places as well as allowing us to see the journey i’ll be documenting when taking my photos.
On my journey Brighton Photo Fringe i was able to see a range of photos that were taken by a range of photographers. My favourite photo from that day is a called Always by your side and was taken by Juliana Mulvany. After we viewed these photos on the seafront we was then able to walk around on the beach giving us a chance to take some of our own photos in which i took some of the sea. shortly after we made our way to the Phoenix centre in which we was able to view the mums not the word exhibit which had some interesting photos of natural women who have chosen not to become parents.
After visiting the photo fringe in Brighton we then travelled to Worthing to see the other parts of the photo fringe. When in worthing we when to another studio and got to see the work of a photgrapher who took photos around Sweden. we then went to the pier and looked at photos taken by people with a similar age range to us. My favourite photo from this show was by someone called Tom Humphrey
There are many different genres of photography which helps photographers work stand out by a type of genre rather than just labeling it as photography.
Nature photography is a wide range of photographs taken outdoors which then display natural aspects such as leaves, trees, flowers, plants etc

One idea I have come up with when conducting my research is to show the Journey of me travelling to London. Although this idea will require me to complete a risk assessment due to the current situation of Covid and also due to the fact i will be travelling to a busy area which will include many risk when doing so.
I developed my idea for my journey to London by deciding which parts of London i wanted to shoot in and how i wanted to do them. When shooting i decided to go with a theme and to shoot all my photos in black and white. I chose to do this as it helps the viewer truly focus on the photo and everything around it rather than getting distracted by colours and only focusing on one point. Once i had chosen my theme i then took photos as i was walking on my journey to help document the journey i was going on.
On week 2 of starting my work i decided to go out to London to take some test shots for one part of a journey. From the tests shots that i gathered i will be using a few of them as my final work. I chose to add a theme to my images and shot them all in black and white. The journey i decided to take around London started at Victoria station and ended at Vauxhall. For part of my journey i got on a boat starting from Westminster Millennium pier and ending up at Vauxhall pier. When in London the health and safety measures i followed was ensuring that i keep 2m away from any member of public to ensure that i keep both myself and them safe. I also put on a face mask when i was in close proximity to other members of the public. I also completed a risk assessment prior to travelling to London to ensure i can keep myself safe.
Another idea i came up with is taking photos around Brighton and Worthing when we go on our trip their to visit the photo fringe. Some of the photos i would like to take is photos of architecture around both brighton and worthing as well as shots of the sea to help document my journey around both Brighton and Worthing.
This time i chose not to go with the theme of taking my photos in black and white instead i chose to take them in colour to help show the true beauty of what’s visible in the photo such as the sea. This allows the audience to view the photo clearly and gather emotion from the photo through the use of colours allowing them to interpret the photo based on how they feel towards it. When in both Brighton and Worthing i ensured that i was sticking to my health and safety protocol which included keeping 2 meters away from members of public as well as ensuring i sanitize my hands when getting on and off the trains as well as when entering buildings such as the Phoenix centre. I also made sure that i wore a face covering when entering vehicles such as the train, when in close proximity to members of the public and also when i entered buildings.
My final idea that i came up with is to photograph my journey around Birch woods which is a woods in my local area. The reasoning behind me choosing to photograph around the woods is because it allows us to see the journey of nature changing which essentially shows us the journey of life through nature due to leaves falling off trees which shows us how nature changes over time. Some of the safety precautions i have to when taking my journey around the woods is to ensure i travel a safe route when walking so i don’t end up getting myself lost. i also need to make sure i steer clear of members of public to keep both of us safe.
